Strengthens families by promoting positive parent child interactions with a commensurate emphasis on the health of the family. The goal of this program is to reduce infant mortality.
The Healthy Start program provides case management services to families with pregnant women who are experiencing medical or social risk factors and parenting women with children up to two years of age, who reside in the Armour Square, Near South, Douglas, Oakland, and Grand Boulevard areas. Healthy Start provides health education classes, interconceptional care, and behavioral health counseling services. Families may enter the program when the woman is pregnant and before the infant is two weeks old.
High-Risk Pregnant Women and Women with Infants two weeks and younger may enter the program and remain until the child is 2 years old. The women must have medical, social, or psychological risk factors that qualify them for this program.
The goal of the program is to reduce infant mortality through education and information sharing with the woman; encouraging good pre and post natal care; helping woman to increase self esteem; providing options and referrals; offering pre and post partum depression counseling; providing Ages and Stages Developmental Screening Tool and outcomes for the infant/child; and encouraging the woman to make a conscious choice to become pregnant again.
